Top Ten Trailer Thursday

Top 10 trailer Thursday

As promised and in no particular order here are the top ten trailers for 2017 movies that have me excited.

  1. Baby Driver

Edgar Wright looks to have fashioned a old-timey tale of the last score and fast-paced motor hijinks and seeded it with an all-star cast (Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Jon Berenthal and Lily James). The story seems a bit trite, but the cast is more than capable of lifting the enterprise on their shoulders. The action and dialogue seem to be on point, the love interest is appropriately doe-eyed and Spacey is maximally villainous. I’m all in.

  1. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

The space movie boom continues to… Well boom. Luc Beeson (The Fifth Element, Lucy) brings Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevigne to one of the most lavishly furnished sci-fi worlds that I’ve ever seen. The stunning visuals alone are enough incentive for me to anxiously await the release of this movie. Sci-fi pulp fans, this is your moment. This is an absolute must see in IMAX.

  1. The Bad Batch

This trailer did exactly what it was supposed to do: intrigue me and excite my curiosity. Clever editing and the almost 80’s sci-fi music undergirding the trailer make me interested to see exactly what is happening in the ominous desert this trailer shows. The cast here is a nerd’s dream (Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves, Diego Luna!!). My ultimate hope for this movie is a spiky, interesting, Road Warrior type of character vehicle. The trailer gives off an enigmatic but unsettling vibe throughout that really holds your attention.

  1. Justice League/ Wonder Woman

The most epic looking Superhero movie of all time and a near goddess in real life playing a ferocious warrior goddess on the big screen… What’s not to love?

  1. Blade Runner

Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Prisoners, Sicario) is a director on fire and he takes on one of the toughest jobs in Hollywood – providing a competent sequel to an all-time classic. 2049 returns Harrison Ford and adds Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto in what is perhaps my MOST anticipated film of this year. If anyone can do Blade Runner justice Villeneuve can.

RIP Superman

  1. Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan turns his attention to the world of non-fiction. His portrayal of the commonplace bravery of the British people in the hairiest of situations -when everything suggested that the war could only go one direction (failure)- is sure to be something like definitive. Christopher Nolan never styles himself as an auteur yet to the general audience he is fulfilling precisely that role. This trailer presages a movie rich in theme and performance.

OMG HARRY STYLES!!

  1. War for the Planet of the Apes

New Batman director (Matt Reeves) looks to follow up the success of “War’s” predecessor with another entry in one of the few successful Hollywood reboots of the last decade. Andy Serkis looks primed to be overlooked again for his amazing mo-cap work and the action is precisely what we have all been hoping for from this franchise.

  1. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Guy Ritchie directs Charlie Hunnam, Dijimon Honsou and Jude Law in what looks to be a King Arthur story that does not shy away from the mythological and the epic. The action here looks to be gobs of fun and Ritchie’s signature stylistic touch is on full display in the trailer.

  1. Alien: Covenant/ Life

As one of the few people on the internet that liked Prometheus, I’m interested to see how A:C  is received. This particular trailer does not do much to differentiate this entry from the preceding efforts but what it does very well is provide confirmation that this will be a terrific space horror story. When I first heard about “Life” I was completely nonplussed, I (and many others) figured that it was simply a rip off of the “Alien” franchise. This trailer shows I was completely mistaken. Life does fall into some “Alien” like tropes but manages to convey a completely different atmosphere and tone (even with the horror motif).

  1. A Ghost Story

Rooney Mara and Batman’s little brother (Casey Affleck) look to continue recent runs of success. On first watch, I was disappointed to see that it didn’t seem to be a horror film. Interestingly enough, A Ghost Story’s trailer feels more like an indie auteur’s take on human psychology and memory… I credit quite a bit of that to the music choice. I’m excited to see A Ghost Story because the story it hints can’t be derived merely from watching the trailer.

What do you think? Do any of these trailers make you want to see the movie more or less? What trailers have you the most excited right now?
